한국어에는 높임법이라는 특별한 언어 규칙이 있습니다. 상대방과의 관계나 나이에 따라 존댓말과 반말을 다르게 사용합니다. 처음 만난 사람이나 나이가 많은 사람에게는 보통 존댓말을 씁니다. 그래서 한국 사람들은 새로운 사람을 만나면 나이를 먼저 물어보는 경우가 많습니다. 그런데 2023년 6월부터 한국에서는 나이를 세는 방법이 조금 달라졌습니다. 법적으로 나이를 말할 때는 만 나이를 기본으로 사용하게 되었습니다. 회사나 학교 같은 곳에서는 나이뿐만 아니라 직급이나 학번도 중요한 기준이 됩니다. 하지만 친한 친구나 나이가 비슷한 사람들 사이에서는 편하게 반말을 사용하기도 합니다.
Translation
Korean has a special language rule called nopimbeop (the honorific system). Depending on the relationship and age between speakers, people use either honorific speech (jondaetmal) or casual speech (banmal) differently. Honorific speech is usually used toward someone you are meeting for the first time or someone older than you. Because of this, Koreans often ask a new acquaintance's age early on. However, starting in June 2023, the way age is counted in Korea changed a little. Legally, age is now generally based on "international age" (man nai). In places like workplaces and schools, not only age but also rank or class/entry year (hakbeon) becomes an important standard. That said, among close friends or people of similar age, casual speech is sometimes used comfortably.
